Sneak Peek

Lisa stumbled through the woods, her 4-inch heels sinking into the dirt and grass. She had a lot of drinks at the Romano house, so her heels sinking in the dirt were the least of her problems.
Having her clutch in one hand and pepper spray in the other irritated her and made it difficult to balance. She fell to her knees a couple times, tripping so hard she came out of her shoes. She had to stop, put her things down, then put her shoes back on. Why didn’t I ask someone for a ride? She thought.
As soon as the thought arrived, it fled. She knew why she didn’t ask for a ride, she was literally thrown out; she was humiliated.
Excitement flooded her when one of the Romano boys asked her to come over to their house for a party. The Romano’s had a lot of siblings, cousins, nieces, and nephews. The kids were mostly in junior high and high school. Lisa had some little sisters who were in elementary school, so she knew there were some young Romano’s too.
Giovanni Romano was a junior in her high school. He didn’t play any sports or anything, but he was great in academics and popular. She thought she’d hit the jackpot when he walked up to her and asked her to come to his house. He said it was a party, that she wouldn’t be the only girl. When she got there, she realized there were a lot of Romano boys there, but no girls. It wasn’t any type of party she wanted to be at.
She tried to leave, but Giovanni sweet-talked her; he made her feel special. He told her she was early, and all his brothers and cousins live nearby so they had already shown up. Still feeling uncomfortable, she sat down, but there were more girls coming, she reassured herself.
They handed her drink after drink while she sat there and waited. A few guys sat next to her, asking her questions. She thought they were trying to get to know her. She needed to have relationships with all the Romano’ if she wanted a serious one with Giovanni. She lost track of time after her third cup. She was unsure of what they were giving her. Just that it stung a little going down, had a bitter taste.
The boys packed in around her, making her unable to move. They tossed her clutch across the room and they pinned her arms down. Her heart beat faster in her chest when Giovanni stepped up and grabbed both her legs.
She protested and struggled. “I am ready to go home. Please stop, let me go,” she insisted.
She became terrified when Giovanni handed her legs to two other boys and they spread them wide and held on tight. She struggled harder. She screamed until something was stuck in her mouth. Her head was hurting, and she was dizzy.
She became relieved when suddenly everyone let her go.
She heard someone say to Giovanni, “Yo G, I thought you said everyone was at Jordan’s house?”
Giovanni’s head turned, and she struggled to make out what he was doing. She tried to scoot off the couch, to get to her clutch. She needed to get to her clutch.
She became humiliated when Giovanni picked her up, walked over to the balcony, and threw her over the edge. She hit the ground hard, on her shoulder and hip.
Her clutch came flying down after her. She scrambled to it and grabbed her phone and pepper spray from it. She didn’t have anyone to call. She couldn’t call her parents. What would she tell them? “I went to a party, got drunk, and was almost raped. Then they threw me over a balcony and now I need a ride.” Her parents would kill her, she was supposed to be at her best friend’s house, anyway.
Lisa fixed her shoes, wiped her face, and began stumbling through the nearby woods.
Her vision was still blurred, her head hurt, and she couldn’t walk straight. Lisa sobbed, realizing that she was stuck out here in the woods with no way home.
Just then, she heard a sound. She turned her head quickly and immediately regretted it when her head started pounding furiously. She thought she heard something go past her, like a gust of wind. Lisa groaned, she was really losing it.
She continued to stumble her way through the woods. She stopped again when she heard some type of animal sound, like a mix between a squeal and a growl. “Sober up Lisa, get it together,” she told herself. She knew there was no such animal around here.
Suddenly, she felt a sharp pain in her neck and shook violently from side to side. Lisa went to spray whoever was behind her and ended up spraying herself in the face. A piercing scream escaped from her mouth and then everything went black.
I’m a book-obsessed wordsmith who’s happiest with a cup of coffee in one hand and a keyboard in the other. Writing is my love language, and I split my creative energies between two identities: as Sheyanne Warren, I craft fantastical worlds full of magic and adventure for YA readers; as Ashley Johnson, I dive deep into gritty mysteries and spine-tingling paranormal tales. When I’m not weaving stories, you’ll find me lost in a good book, plotting my next twist, or pretending I’m not adding yet another novel to my TBR pile. Let’s get lost in the stories together!”
