This was a quick, fun read for me. Exciting, young adult story with teenage romance, deception, suspense, and magic. I appreciated that the characters dealt with issues I'm familiar with like typical hairstyling woes for black people with kinky or course hair.

I loved how easy breezy this book was to jump in to. If you pick this up, you will read it quick. The dialogue and discussion is all too familiar (and as a white woman I’m sure I’m missing a lot of nuance that my POC friends would pick up on better)

This was a very entertaining book! I loved the idea of a spy highschool, but with a twist. The author's writing was much better than the last novel I read from her and you can really feel the improvements

Janelle and Duante went over to the dry bar and got a soda. Darius and Shanelle were still on the dance floor going.

“How do they have more stamina than us?” Duante asked.

Janelle laughed and opened her mouth to respond when she saw Monica and Derek headed her way. She quickly snapped it shut.

Monica was dressed in a wedding dress with blood dripping down it and Derek was a pirate.

Monica smiled wide. “Hey Sparks. This is a great thing you did for your kids. It’s almost like everyone here is here for them and not just because it’s a party with free food.”

Derek grabbed her arm and squeezed.

“And your costume is cute. Who are you, the black Wonder Woman?”

Derek squeezed her arm harder and she failed at trying to yank it away.

Duante, you must be. Hmm I don’t know. Dressed tacky maybe.”

Janelle smiled. “Poor thing. I know you have been struggling all these years without anyone to hate on. It must have been hard on you, Duante and I leaving and settling down, having a family. I’ll give you that pass. You are looking at Nu’Bia and Prince Akeem.”

“From Coming to America,” Derek said with a smirk.

Duante nodded his head.

“I don’t even know who they are,” Monica sniffed. “You were too poor to get good costumes.”

“No Monica, that just means you’re uncultured.” Janelle snapped.

Suddenly Lanelle and Dion popped up. Lanelle glared at Monica.

“Ms. Michaelson, have the drug tests come back yet? It’s been a couple weeks and we haven’t heard anything.”

Monica looked at her. “Um, yes they have.”

“Oh, they must have come back negative. That’s why we didn’t hear about them.” Lanelle replied.

Monica smiled and before she could respond, Dion spoke up. “Naw, we don’t want that smile. Keep that same energy you had talking to my parents. Or that same energy you had taken to Benjamin behind the gym. Or that same energy you had telling Booker and Imani to spy on us.”

Janelle stepped within inches of Monica. “And when I ruin your career with my thank you speech for fucking with kids, bring that same energy.”

Monica squinted her eyes and squared her shoulders.

“Now ladies, whatever this, now it is not the place or time,” Shanelle shouted, her accent floating through the group of people.

“You better remember who she is stepping to like that,” Dion said.

“Lanelle, Dion, go join your friends and enjoy your party.”

They knew it wasn’t a request, it was a demand. With one last look at Monica and Derek, they turned and headed back to the dance floor.

“You won’t get to say that speech. I’ll prove you cheated, and I’ll prove your kids are cheating. There is no way you could have been that good. I deserve this award, not you.”

Janelle smiled. “See you next month Monica.” She winked and walked away.

Monica went to follow but Duante’s glare stopped her in her tracks.

She was mad, but not stupid. She did remember who they were and how good they were. It was time for her to start playing dirty.

“I’m done Monica,” Derek said.

Monica snapped her gaze towards him.

“I told you if the drug tests didn’t work, I was done. I’m done with the wild goose chase, plus my relationship with my son is broken.”

Pssh, you don’t care about that boy. You left him in foster care for 15 years,” Monica spat.

Derek jerked back with the slap of her words. He slowly nodded his head. “Enjoy the party Monica.”

“I don’t need you. I don’t need Jason. I will stop her from getting that award by my damn self.”

Kids walking past started looking at Monica and she realized where she was. Straightening her shoulders, she headed back into the crowd. They would not run her out. She was Monica Michaelson dammit, she was this damn company.

I’m a book-obsessed wordsmith who’s happiest with a cup of coffee in one hand and a keyboard in the other. Writing is my love language, and I split my creative energies between two identities: as Sheyanne Warren, I craft fantastical worlds full of magic and adventure for YA readers; as Ashley Johnson, I dive deep into gritty mysteries and spine-tingling paranormal tales. When I’m not weaving stories, you’ll find me lost in a good book, plotting my next twist, or pretending I’m not adding yet another novel to my TBR pile. Let’s get lost in the stories together!”
